Commercial Auto and Trucking Insurance clients are often asked to provide proof of insurance before starting work, hauling a load, entering a facility or meeting a contract requirement. A Certificate of Insurance, commonly called a COI, is one of the most common ways to provide that evidence.
What a COI shows
A certificate summarizes key policy information such as the insured business, coverage types, policy dates and limits. It is a snapshot of coverage rather than the policy itself.
Certificate holder information matters
The company requesting the certificate may need to be listed correctly as the certificate holder, including the proper business name and address.
Additional insured requests are separate
A request to be listed as a certificate holder is not always the same as a request for additional insured status. Requirements should be reviewed carefully before changes are made.
Accuracy helps prevent delays
Correct names, addresses and requested wording can help reduce rejected certificates and follow-up requests.
Keep your agent informed
If a customer or contract has specific insurance requirements, share them with your insurance professional so the request can be reviewed against the policy.
